There exist two hypothetical schools of human facial expressions in my mind. One believes that emotion is codified or categorized in a limited number of expressions, or masks that are played like cards in the game of social relations. The other school holds every expression to be unique albeit with superficial resemblances the genealogy of any particular expression being ultimately intractable. Looking at these portraits by Ryszard Semko the first impression is of an overall similarity compromised by a rage for differentiation.
